What’s going in my ears

A short while ago I posted here about my move over to Google’s music subscription service in an attempt to find new music and avoid the constant abuse of the ‘skip track’ button. I also promised to update once I’d started to find new, interesting (to me at least) stuff. So here it is.

Individual Tracks – Most of these aren’t the sort of thing I’d normally buy an album of, so the shared playlists have been a godsend.

Hozier – Take Me To Church

Hozier

Hozier

It came out last year, but it’s taken me until now to hear it. At first listen it’s not that special, but the chorus is fantastic and very sing-(shout)-a-long-able. Well worth a listen.

Saint Raymond – Fall At Your Feet

Not too much to say about this one, it’s just a good, listenable song. I like it a lot.

Chloe Howl – Paper Heart

I really like her vocals, very catchy poppy song. Again, not the sort of thing I’d normally listen to at all. Maybe I’m just getting old?

Albums – I haven’t strayed far from the path with these, but I’m pleased all the same.

The Birthday Massacre – Hide And Seek

The Birthday Massacre – Hide And Seek

I had to put this one first. Despite only getting it yesterday I already love this album. I’m surprised I’d never heard of these before; they’ve been around for a while now. I don’t really know how to classify the music, and neither it seems, does the internet. A mix of synth, industrial, rock and new wave? Either way, it’s fantastic. I love the vocals and will definitely be catching up on the back catalogue.

Red Dragon Cartel – Red Dragon Cartel

Headed up by Jake E Lee who was a guitarist with Ozzy, they’re a new band and a good old fashioned Metal album. Some of the tracks are a bit so-so, but there’s some real stand-out stuff with some proper heavy riffs I’d love to hear on a night out. Slaves and Shout It Out in particular will end up on playlists I think.

Device – Device

As soon as you hear the opening vocals it’s obvious who the front man is – David Draiman of Disturbed. However, instead of a Disturbed clone band, this is very much industrial.  Joined by the former guitarist from Filter (if you’ve never listened to Filter, get the Title Of Record album immediately, I spent years listening to that), and a throng of guest appearances. Serj Tankian (SOAD), Tom Morello (RATM), Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), M Shadows (Avenged Sevenfold), Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath) and Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) to name a few. The result is a really good album. Listen.

Placebo – Loud Like Love

Placebo – Loud Like Love

Placebo really are my favourite band of all time, there’s no getting away from it. I’d not bought an album of theirs for a while, and this one completely slipped me by. I’m so, SO, pleased I caught up on it though, it’s vintage Placebo. I don’t think there’s a weak song on the album, but if I was pressed I’d pick Scene of the Crime (love the piano) and A Million Little Pieces as my favourites on it so far.

Go. Now. Go and listen to the songs.
