Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit

Neither are Apples. Yeah, clever that, see what I did by capitalising ‘Apple’, I’m so subtle. The reason for my nonsense will soon become clear.

November this year for me had a special meaning, something that doesn’t happen very often, one of those occasions to really get excited about. That’s right folks, mobile phone contract renewal time! I’m not exactly excited by renewing contracts, don’t get me wrong, but what I am very keen on is getting a new handset!

I’ve been agonising over what to get since early summer, because I’m a complete technology freak (despite it causing me so many headaches) and I knew it was one of those decisions that was going to stick with me for the next eighteen months. I’ve known for a long while that I didn’t want an Iphone, mostly because I’ve already had an Ipod Touch for a few years now and am frankly bored with the (mostly rubbish) apps, but also because there’s nothing worse than Iphone owners like the ones I work with who believe they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread, and constantly nag you to get one, so that left me wondering what to go for. I’ve always liked Blackberries (yes, yes, they’re very tasty, har har), in a kind of ‘admired from afar’ way, so that was on the potential list along with the new breed of SonyEricssons which seem to have come a long way, and the Samsung Galaxy S (mmmm, that screen), but deep down I always knew what make I wanted. HTC.

I remember workmates a few years ago with the old XDAs which were made by HTC and although for the time they were impressive, they were so clunky and horrible to use. In the time inbetween however they’ve made vast leaps and the current batch of smartphones they make are beautiful. The thought of owning one of their phones was quite a pull in itself, but couple that with the fact that they’re now running Google’s Android operating system (open, hugely customisable and easily integrated with my Google accounts) and you’re looking at one sold man. In the end I was lucky enough to be offered one of these…

An HTC Desire, running Android 2.2 (Froyo). I absolutely love it!

Despite having only had it for a couple of days, I’ve already got completely lost in it, the level of customisation on offer is insane. I can see that as I read more and more, and more importantly, see more and more screengrabs from other peoples’ setups, I’m going to be playing with this one for a long time to come. It’s blindingly fast, everything opens almost instantaneously, and the google accounts integration is very good. The only thing I don’t like so far is the battery only lasting a day, but I guess that’s to be expected with the amount of messing around I’ve done with it :).

I know you’ll never convert an Iphone fan, those guys are either dyed-in-the-wool loyal or totally blinkered, but these new Android phones are certainly the ones that could do it. Expect to be bored senseless by my adventures in the coming weeks ;).

I’m in love.
